Historical Timeline of the Tarahumara

i) Tarahumara invade Spanish conquerors in 16th century, establish roots
in and above the Copper Canyons in the Sierra Madre.

ii) For 5 centuries have lived there, far from each other, in recluse, living in
caves or small adobe houses.

iii) Ate completely off the land, what they could chase down or what they
could grow.

iv) As centuries have passed, the Mexican government has intruded their
land with road systems to get to and from these reclusive areas.

v) Modern day commodities have become much more accessible, but not
necessarily strongly desired by the Tarahumara.

vi) At one time they had not reliance or interest in modern technologies.

vii) Younger generations are becoming more open and interested in these
new ways of living.

viii) Drought, climate change, drug cartels, and more accessibility to and from
the rest of society is causing a drop in Tarahumara population.

ix) <70,000 Tarahumara people living today.

Historical Dissemination

i) Modern day outside influences are greatly impacting the traditions,
livelihood, and prosperity of this culture.

ii) Forces that are outside of the Tarahumaras’ control and interest.
